AdWatch: Tournament Edition is mobile gaming brought to its inevitable conclusion.

AdWatch: Tournament Edition is a 1st-of-its-kind mobile “game.” It’s an ironic take on the state of mobile gaming featuring a notable lack of any actual gameplay elements. That’s right. AdWatch is a competitive global leaderboard which you climb by-wait for it-watching ads. It gets better. Once you are done watching an ad, you can double your score by watching another ad. GENIUS!

Hosted by a cast of adorable, animated prisoners called the AdWatch Party Pals, the “game” is a satirical, tongue-in-cheek look at the current state of mobile gaming and its dependence on ad revenue. Videos of the Party Pals unlock as you watch ads, revealing an increasingly disturbing storyline with vague references to a much larger and scarier world behind the scenes of the Party Pals’ colorful facade.

“The story starts several months ago, when Dan (marketing guy) kept asking and asking us to put more video ads in our games,” says Adam Bohn, CEO of Artix Entertainment. “Yergen (artist) laughed and said we should just make a game where all you did was watch ads. We made it as a joke. But the cute little characters that Yergen made for it were so freaking cute we came up with a script mocking the game-ad industry and it evolved into a conspiracy plot with supernatural corporate origins.”

The ironic truth to AdWatch: Tournament Edition is that while you are reading this, players are obsessively playing it to get to the top of the leaderboard. Contender for “The MOST INFLUENTIAL and HONEST game of 2015”?

AdWatch: Tournament Edition is available now on the Apple App Store and Google Play.
