GlowGrid – a hypnotic, retro puzzle game – is out for iOS and Android

GlowGrid is a minimal open-ended puzzle game with a very simple mechanic: players lay Tetris-like pieces onto the grid. The player earns points by making groups of matching tiles, while blocker tiles get in the way of their progress. By earning enough points, the blockers on the grid are destroyed, opening up the grid for further play. This mechanic of filling and emptying the board gives the game a hypnotic, addictive quality. A carefully balanced scoring system gives the game strategic depth – the player must decide whether to keep the grid open by making small groups, or play a riskier long game by trying to make higher-scoring combos.

Features
•Deep, open-ended gameplay
•Rich retro visuals
•A dreamy 80’s synth soundtrack
•Multiple game modes – casual mode and panic (timed) mode
Pricing & availability
GlowGrid is available for iOS and Android phones and tablets. The game is free to try for the first 10 levels, with the full game unlocked via a single In-App Purchase of $1.99 / £1.59.

History
The game originated as an ambitious, complex city-building / puzzle mash-up inspired by games like Carcasonne and Triple Town. However, after a few days of prototyping it pretty much took a life of its own, resulting instead in a stripped-down puzzle game. A basic Flash version was released in September 2013, which has had half a million plays and an average session duration of 45 minutes. The mobile version expands on the original by adding more tile types, game modes and generally pushes the production values.
