2014 has started with a bang for mobile gamers. Topping an extremely strong January Android Qi game chart is Douglas Cowley’s Hoplite, a deceptively nuanced roguelike strategy game with a stripped-back art style. ‘Stripped-back’ isn’t a phrase that you’d readily associate with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, however. Rockstar’s sprawling open-world masterpiece finally surfaced on Android in January, securing the #3 spot in the process. Down in fifth spot, though, LYNE is one of those classy puzzlers that’s as easy on the eye as it is taxing on the brain. If there’s a prettier way to match shapes, we haven’t seen it. Finally, Crescent Moon Games add a clever progression system and a Minecraft aesthetic to the familiar Trials HD format in
Blocky Roads.

Clean Calendar Widget Pro tops January’s Android Qi app chart. And that title SURE is pretty descriptive. This is a crisp, stylish calendar widget to help you remove the bloat from your virtual life. At #2, DU Speed Booster is another apt app title. DU Apps promises to boost the speed of your phone here by up to 60 percent by cleaning out your phone’s unwanted files and managing background tasks. Transit App is clearly going places at #4, meanwhile. This clever app will ‘tell’ you when the next bus or train is arriving in your current location, and will even plan journeys for you. Keeping its beady eye on things is the maker of Dropcam. With this handy tool, you can hook your Android phone up to your webcam and monitor your house remotely, complete with motion- and sound-sensing alerts.
