The Ur-Quan Masters HD project has released their high resolution remake of Star Control 2: The Ur-Quan Masters.
Running on a forked version of the open source Ur-Quan Masters engine, it has entirely new artwork and runs at over 4 times the original resolution.
You can run the game with either the new high resolution graphics, or play the game with the classic artwork.
Star Control 2 was game of the year in 1992. It has since been called by many gaming publications as one of the best PC games of all time. It was open sourced by its creators in 2002. However, due to Atari owning the copyright to the name, “Star Control” the game was renamed “The Ur-Quan Masters”. It has been since updated to run on multiple systems and offer features like internet multi-player.
The game is free, has no DRM, and is open source. It runs in Windows, Mac, & Linux. Android & native Chrome browser support expected soon.
The game needs at least 1280×960 resolution to run the hi-resolution graphics but will have offer a 640×480 mode in the next version.
