2014 has started with a bang for mobile gamers. Topping an extremely strong January iPhone Qi game chart is Douglas Cowley’s Hoplite, a deceptively nuanced roguelike strategy game with a stripped-back art style. Hello Games will feel unlucky not to have topped the chart with Joe Danger Infinity, mind, having produced one of the most generously proportioned – not to mention gorgeous – iPhone games ever made. Of course, that very same description could be applied to Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which is a truly console-standard arcade racer. We DID tell you it was a strong month. Finally, we have Crescent Moon Games’s impossibly slick action-platformer Shadow Blade, at #5. There are few games with such a capacity to make you feel like a badass ninja. This is one of them.

Pic Collage tops January’s iPhone Qi app chart, and it’s easy to see why it’s been getting such widespread attention. This is a beautiful collage creator with powerful editing tools and a sharp UI. At #2, meanwhile, the creator of My Mountain of Debt takes the novel approach of gamifying that difficult debt reduction process. The idea is to make saving money fun, and wouldn’t you know it? It works. Healthy finances are one thing, but Garden Plate is all about promoting a healthier diet. And its dev does so by presenting a range of delicious vegetarian recipes in a visually appealing format. Who needs meat? Finally, pCloud is a new cloud storage solution with 10GB of free space. There are no limitations on file size, either, making it perfect for sharing HD video content.
