Publisher 3D Realms has teamed with indie development studio Interceptor Entertainment to create and release a new character-based IP, starring an independent, fully capable female lead, Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison. Her expertise includes explosives and demolitions, hence her code name. The game is a top-down action-shooter that starts with an alien invasion at the White House and spans three alien worlds.
Among Bombshell’s unique qualities is her highly experimental robotic arm, given to her to replace an arm she lost while trying to save her squad from a bomb threat. This arm incorporates alien technology that is not fully understood, and throughout the game Bombshell comes to learn more and more of its capabilities, especially in terms of becoming weaponized.
“We set out to make a non-stop action ride that feels like it came from the 90’s in terms of style, humor and fun,” said Frederick Schreiber, CEO of Interceptor.
Mike Nielsen, CEO of 3D Realms adds, “Shelly Harrison is a character we’re all proud of. It’s not often we see games with compelling female leads who can hold their own in this male-hero dominated industry.”
The game is currently available for special launch week pricing on both Steam and GOG.com.There are two versions, a standard version that is the full Bombshell game, but for less than $5 more you can get the Digital Deluxe Edition that also includes the full 150+ minute soundtrack, the digital art book, hi-res world map overviews, and early Beta access to the Bombshell Build Engine Prequel shipping later this year.
Reviews
“… consistent, detailed, and driven… Bombshell has both a promise of story and a promise of interaction that could come together into something with a real violent thrust, not unlike the lean, aggressive beauty of Mad Max: Fury Road.”
