Galaxy Pest Control and its publishing label Sideline Amusements today announce that they are working in collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products to bring the beloved arcade hit Q*bert ™ to the personal computer via the Steam platform, with tablet and mobile versions to follow. Q*bert is slated for release today for $4.99.
The isometric platform puzzle game featuring everyone’s favorite grawlix-spouting hero will be released in both a pixel-perfect classic 2D version and a re-imagined ‘Rebooted’ version with state-of-the-art 3D graphics and game play that features additional characters and achievements while staying true to the spirit of the original concept. Both iterations are exciting ‘twitch’ games requiring keen puzzle solving skills and logic.
“With renewed interest in Q*bert, in part due to the cameo in the recent Wreck It Ralph animated feature film, we are delighted to re-introduce the game and characters to current fans as well as a new generation of gamers who are experiencing Q*bert for the first time,” stated Mark Caplan, Vice President, Consumer Products, Worldwide Marketing & Distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment.
First introduced in 1982 by Gottlieb & Co. Q*bert was critically-acclaimed and went on to become the one of the most successful arcade games of all time. It inspired home versions, a variety of Q*bert merchandise, and even an animated TV series.
Q*bert Classic stays true to the original in all its jagged 2D pixel art glory, now optimized for the modern PC with mouse and Steam gamepad controls. As the title character, players jump around an isometric cube pyramid and convert each block’s color while avoiding familiar adversaries Coily, Ugg, Slick, Sam, Wrong Way and Red Ball. Levels become progressively harder with more enemies blocking your path and the tiles requiring multiple jumps to change to the required color.
Q*bert Rebooted takes the arcade classic and catapults it into the 21st century 3D game play that takes full advantage of today’s technologies yet remains faithful to the original Q*bert. Featuring hexagonal blocks instead of squares, Q*bert Rebooted introduces new enemies, playable characters, power-ups, traps, gem collecting and characters, and new ways to play.
Q*bert Rebooted highlights:
· Level Select – replay all previously unlocked levels and track progress against friends.
· 7 New Playable Characters – introducing Q*zard, Q*bertha, Q*bot, Q*zilla, Q*tee, Q*knight and Q*nicorn, all based on the original Q*bert form.
· 3 New Enemies – the classic cast of adversaries are joined by new enemies Homer, Uppercut and Treasure Chest
· 10 Achievements – These include Classic Master (2D Q*bert), Newbert (3D Q*bert), Qbertorama (Q*zard), Snake Surprise (3D Coily), Green Machine (2D Green Ball), Ugg! (2D Ugg), Extra Help (Sheild), Down for the Count (Q*bert Dazed), Disc Rider (2D Disc) and Coin-Op Collector (3D Diamonds).
“There are plenty of good new games out there, but there is a certain nostalgic affection for and plenty of playability in some of the old classic games,” commented Jamie Ottillie, co-founder and CEO of Galaxy Pest Control. ”Robert van Gool, the president and CEO of Gonzo Games, and I got together a couple of years ago and realized we had a shared vision of bringing one of the best of these – Q*bert – to today’s most popular platforms and introduce it to a new generation of gamers. We have a chance to pay homage to the original title while expanding it in some new directions.”
