With MMX Racing – Bigger is always Better

Hutch, the games studio behind both Smash Cops and Smash Bandits Racing, today released their latest project – MMX Racing – for iOS THIS IS IT! Your chance to create a fire-breathing Monster Truck and race it head-to-head over spectacular jump filled courses. Experience benchmark graphics, physics and adrenaline-filled excitement in MMX Racing, the must-have racing title of 2014.

Hot on the heels of previous fuel injected projects comes MMX Racing, the new free to download racing game for iPhone and iPad. After 30m successful downloads with such games as Smash Cops and Smash Bandits Racing, the development team at Hutch were determined to tackle something bigger. “We knew we wanted to stay in the ‘vehicle action’ space and Monster Trucks just felt right”, says Jonathan Alpine, Design Director at Hutch. “They’re the biggest, baddest things around and we wanted to do them justice… make them HUGE on screen, recreate that amazing way they move and react to jumps, everything right down to the way the tires squash!”.

With MMX Racing it’s possible to completely transform your humble truck into a firebreathing monster of a machine with a multitude of upgrade and customization options available to the player. “We loved the before and after idea”, says Jonathan. “The transformation from normal car into Monster Truck is a big part of their appeal and we didn’t feel like anyone had involved the player in this process before. Get them picking out a road car and then jacking up its suspension, fitting bigger tires, tuning the engine. Let them create their perfect truck”.

MMX Racing Features
• Bad Ass Trucks and Amazing Graphics
• Head to Head Racing with killer Jumps
• Upgrading & Transforming basic truck to Monster Truck
• Cool Monster Energy Content !

A main area of focus for MMX Racing was capturing the visceral movement of a monster truck and balancing that with a super-simple control system, as Senior Engineer Andy Ellis explains, “Each truck is made up of multiple moving parts, so as it goes over the jumps, you can see all the suspension working and parts moving independently. It was challenge taking this realistic physics simulation and harnessing and constraining it to make it actually controllable. We have very simple, intuitive one-touch control and we want to give the player the feeling of control over the truck, with consistent response and feedback. Ultimately, it’s all about the controls and the gameplay”.

As with every Hutch release, the visuals play a huge part in making that instant connection with the user, grabbing their attention and drawing them in. “For MMX Racing we wanted to achieve the most breath taking visuals possible on mobile”, says Creative Director Will Whitaker. “We’ve made the trucks live, breath fire, paw the ground like angry bulls and jump like insane wildebeest. All of our experience has been focused on quality – awesome detail, sumptuous lighting, and believable surfaces with fully dynamic suspension that reacts with bone splitting realism when the trucks slam into dirt after the big-air jumps. We’ve designed an experience so visceral the player will think they can small the gasoline”. !

After Smash Cops and Smash Bandits, the development team at Hutch wanted to transform the control system for MMX Racing, focusing on refining the challenges presented to the player “The game is a departure for us in the control department”, Jonathan reveals. “We’ve gone super-simple with the main interaction because we want anyone to be able to pick it up and instantly get into the gameplay. The challenge and depth comes from mastering the rhythm of each track and also holding your nerve when you’re neck-and-neck with your opponent”.

The challenge is yours from today. MMX Racing is available on the App Store for free. MMX Racing is designed for iPhone and iPad devices and requires OS 7.0 or above.
